[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign.
Welcome to Spellbound. I'm Deidre.
[00:00:08] Speaker B: And I'm Jillian.
[00:00:09] Speaker A: And this is a podcast where we serve up a healthy dose of romance, pop culture, and just a little millennial melee for good measure.
[00:00:15] Speaker B: Love it.
[00:00:16] Speaker A: How have you been?
[00:00:16] Speaker B: I've been good. All right. I mean, surviving, honestly.
[00:00:21] Speaker A: Not thriving.
[00:00:21] Speaker B: Not thriving.
[00:00:22] Speaker A: Not in this economy.
[00:00:23] Speaker B: No, no, no.
My budget is tight. The belt notch, I had to, I had to drill a little. A new notch. I mean, it is tight.
[00:00:36] Speaker A: It's, it's, it's real rough over here. It's bare bones.
[00:00:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:00:39] Speaker A: We're doing anything that we can to just save a couple. Save a dollar.
[00:00:44] Speaker B: Just a dollar. Even. A dollar. Even 50 cents.
[00:00:46] Speaker A: You know what it is for me? It's the small little like just daily treats and daily purchases that add up. It's like any little sweet treats, I go over here and I get me like a ten dollar latte. Well, you know, you get five sweet treats in a week.
[00:00:59] Speaker B: I know, I know. You pay the bill, J. Christ. I know. And in a month, that's 200.
[00:01:04] Speaker A: No, absolutely. I'm sorry, I. We are cutting it down. Usually Jillian and I have dinner after we record these episodes. Jillian, I'm doing dinner beforehand tonight.
I've really enjoyed.
We talked about this. I'm not a chef by any means.
[00:01:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:01:22] Speaker A: At this age. I'm about to be 38 in two months.
[00:01:25] Speaker B: Not going to do it.
[00:01:25] Speaker A: I.
I'm just standing in my truth. I'm not turning on that stove if it's not just to like, do something quick.
[00:01:32] Speaker B: Right, right.
[00:01:32] Speaker A: You know what I mean?
And so I really love the power of the 4 for 35 family meal at whole Foods. They love to see me coming up there at that counter.
[00:01:43] Speaker B: I love that too. But then I've only done it once, but I ate way too much.
[00:01:48] Speaker A: We just gotta section it out way too much.
[00:01:52] Speaker B: I don't know, there's something about me. I don't like saving food, so I'm like, I got to eat it all.
[00:01:58] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:01:59] Speaker B: So that's not great.
[00:02:00] Speaker A: This doesn't feel as bad to me as like. Cuz it's $35, which is like one order on like Uber Eats or Door Dash. Like, let's just be honest. I've ordered, I've ordered a Caesar salad from Bar Sienna down in the West Loop. And with everything all told, all of
[00:02:16] Speaker B: a sudden it's $40.
[00:02:17] Speaker A: It's 50 bucks coming to my door.
[00:02:19] Speaker B: Yep, yep, yep.
[00:02:20] Speaker A: And you know, after the life I've lived, some nights I'm like, Worth it.
Worth it. I'm gonna spend $50 on this salmon Caesar salad when I'm gonna be hungry in an hour.
[00:02:34] Speaker B: Yeah, it's just what it is. I know. And literally you're like so excited and then you eat it and you're like, I just spent $50.
[00:02:41] Speaker A: Just $50.
[00:02:42] Speaker B: And then you go back and get some gobo.
Yeah.
[00:02:46] Speaker A: You're doing whatever you can to supplement the hunger because that, that does not satisfy a growing girl like me. You know what I mean?
So. So yeah, you know, we're just doing what we can to budget over here. I.
Yeah, we're keeping things the same. You know, there are things that I'm like, it's not quite to the point where I'm like, okay, I'm not gonna get like a monthly, you know, manicure, like, you know, keep my things up, but it is just like cutting out a lot of. Just the petty, mindless, useless spending that, like.
Does Birdie really need a new water bowl?
[00:03:21] Speaker B: Right, right, right. Well, I thought about that the other day. I think I'm gonna get literally a water bowl. I mean, I had to turn into a Dunkin Girl over Starbucks. I can't do it anymore.
[00:03:36] Speaker A: Yeah, well, I went last year and I purchased a rapid cold brew maker machine.
Best thing that I've.
[00:03:45] Speaker B: Is it.
[00:03:45] Speaker A: Yeah, it's great because I had like a cold brew situation.
[00:03:50] Speaker B: Yeah, basically.
[00:03:51] Speaker A: And what, you know, of course, what you do is you basically put the roughly ground coffee in there and then you let it seep for.
[00:03:57] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:03:57] Speaker A: Or let it steep for a day, 24 hours. I don't have time for that. I don't have this time. Like, we gotta move.
[00:04:04] Speaker B: No. Yeah.
[00:04:04] Speaker A: And so this machine, I put in a lot of coffee, I fill the carafe up with cold water.
And then within like eight minutes, I've got like a cold carafe of cold brew.
[00:04:15] Speaker B: Shut up. Wait, where did you get this?
[00:04:17] Speaker A: I got it at World Market.
[00:04:19] Speaker B: Oh my God. Yeah.
[00:04:20] Speaker A: And It'll make like 40 ounces of cold brew.
[00:04:24] Speaker B: Wow.
[00:04:25] Speaker A: Mild, regular, bold, Whatever your decision. And then I got like a nice, like little air sealed mason jar, you know, kind of thing where I'm like, here, I'll store it in here. Because that beats me going out here.
[00:04:37] Speaker B: Right, right.
[00:04:38] Speaker A: And spending you know, at least five, six dollars on a. A cup of cold brew in the morning. Oh, at least. At least. I'm so tired of it. They are abso robbing me in the city of Chicago.
[00:04:50] Speaker B: I mean, the thing is, I think they want us home cooking and, and they Want us just in our kitchens.
[00:04:57] Speaker A: I won't do it. I'll go down with a fight.
I mean, this is about as best as they're gonna get for me. It's gonna have to be somebody else cooking the food. And I'm just heating it up at 375 for 25 minutes.
[00:05:06] Speaker B: Honestly, I think I need more ball jars. That's what I should buy. I should. I should start pickling things.
[00:05:14] Speaker A: Where are you gonna grow it?
[00:05:16] Speaker B: I don't know. Nowhere.
I don't even have a porch.
[00:05:22] Speaker A: And then you just have a bunch of ball. Ball jars. I love that vision for you. I love it.
Very domesticated.
That's great.
[00:05:32] Speaker B: I need a ball jar for my chia pudding. I need it for my cold brew.
[00:05:36] Speaker A: I don't know, I just. Yeah, just the mindless man. I'm like, I have got to rapid. I'm getting hit here all at one time with big purchases. Number one, it was like the organizing of my. My house that hit me big. Then, like, the next week, like, I had car repairs done, then I had my hair colored and cut. You know, that's hit me.
[00:05:58] Speaker B: Yep.
[00:05:58] Speaker A: Hard and fast all at one time. So now I'm over here being like, scraping pennies together.
[00:06:03] Speaker B: I know. It's crazy how that happens. How it's like you're like, okay, wait, I. What happened this month?
[00:06:10] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:06:10] Speaker B: Like, you just have a string of big purchases.
[00:06:13] Speaker A: Yeah.
And now I'm just face down being like, I gotta. I gotta lick my wounds.
I gotta financially recover, and I hate to see that the here at the eve of summer.
[00:06:23] Speaker B: I know, I know. But you know what? Yeah. I don't know. Just like a couple weeks of tightening and then we'll be back to it. We'll be back to it. But, you know, not the same clip.
[00:06:35] Speaker A: No, it's gonna be a minute. Living in Trump's America, we really. I don't understand how people are, like, raising families.
[00:06:42] Speaker B: Yeah, I don't either. You know what? Today I was like, you know, I was hearing. I was reading something about how Iceland wants to join the eu, and I was like, can Chicago join the eu?
[00:06:53] Speaker A: I mean, I hope we're just broken up into a bunch of nation states and then we're just like, we're over here, but, like, we don't claim them.
[00:06:59] Speaker B: Right, right, right. Yeah, but then there would be. There would be really a world war then, don't you think?
[00:07:05] Speaker A: Huge. And then they'd be trying to breach. They'd be trying to breach our border.
Like, not me needing a Passport to go see Tim and D.
Are y' all all right down here? What's going on?
[00:07:25] Speaker B: Yeah. Oh, my God. You gotta trek that wilderness.
[00:07:28] Speaker A: Oh, God. How terrible would that be? Just. Yeah, awful.
Yeah. But other than that, things have been pretty good. I'm trying to think what else. Mikey and I went to go see Yeba last Tuesday, which was fantastic. Just a man of the arts, a
[00:07:43] Speaker B: man of the people in so many ways.
[00:07:45] Speaker A: Also, happy 40th birthday to longtime friend and listener of the pod. Clark, we love you. Happy birthday. We love you.
[00:07:52] Speaker B: Happy birthday.
[00:07:53] Speaker A: Had a great rooftop party with friends.
[00:07:54] Speaker B: That's incredible.
[00:07:55] Speaker A: Loved ones abound.
[00:07:56] Speaker B: Oh, my God.
He's a loved. He's a beloved.
[00:08:00] Speaker A: He is. He isn't for good reason. Just a. Just a beautiful silver fox.
[00:08:05] Speaker B: Y.
[00:08:05] Speaker A: We love to see.
[00:08:06] Speaker B: Seriously beautiful. He. You know, and he was giving us all the, like, celebrities he's gotten before. And I was like, I can see it.
[00:08:14] Speaker A: People aren't wrong.
[00:08:15] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:08:16] Speaker A: A little Leonardo DiCaprio look alike. You wouldn't be able to tell me anything. My head would be not fitting through the door. You know what I'm saying?
Stop.
I would be like, I'm sorry. The girls think I favor Leo DiCaprio.
[00:08:32] Speaker B: Oh, my God. Are you kidding me?
[00:08:35] Speaker A: Yeah, he was great.
[00:08:36] Speaker B: Yeah, it was great.
[00:08:38] Speaker A: Yeah. Well, that's it for me in terms of updates.
[00:08:40] Speaker B: Yeah, that's basically it.
[00:08:42] Speaker A: Should we get into a little here, you hear? Ye.
[00:08:44] Speaker B: I think so.
[00:08:47] Speaker A: Okay. I don't really have any sort of like, world news updates. I am going to tell you. I. Okay. I finished the pit.
You know, I'll always keep a special flame in my heart for Dr. Jack Abbott. Sean Hennessy.
And, you know, we're just gonna put him over here in his little cubbyhole. I will bring him back out for season three. Always love him. I do have a new kind of cultural obsession.
[00:09:12] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:09:13] Speaker A: My friend Joanna, who is also a sometime listener of the pod.
[00:09:17] Speaker B: We love her. Love it.
[00:09:18] Speaker A: She and I will message each other sometimes, just about, like, random things that we're consuming, whether it be on the Internet or shows.
She reaches out to me. What was it this weekend must have been. And she was like, have you been watching off campus?
[00:09:33] Speaker B: Oh, okay. Okay.
[00:09:35] Speaker A: And I said, no, I haven't been watching off campus. Now, mind you, when she asked me this question, I'm not completely unfamiliar with what she's talking about. I've seen the girls talking about it on social media. It's been like, in my periphery. I just haven't necessarily watched it. Cause I'M like, I do maybe need someone to, like, vouch for watching it.
[00:09:52] Speaker B: For sure. For sure.
[00:09:53] Speaker A: She's like, I think you should. I think you should give it a 10. Check it out. It's eight episodes. I will embark on episode five this evening.
I'm locked in.
[00:10:04] Speaker B: Who's in it?
[00:10:04] Speaker A: I'm having a great time. It's a bunch of, like, unknown people in it. But you know who is in it? Who? If we hadn't watched the Pit, we probably would never known. It's the actor that plays Mateo.
[00:10:14] Speaker B: Shut the fuck up.
[00:10:15] Speaker A: He's in it. He's not like the main character. Here's the thing. So. So this. This show is going to be a series. It's been greenlit for a second season. The actors are already, like, filming the second season, apparently.
[00:10:26] Speaker B: O. Okay.
[00:10:27] Speaker A: Based on a series of really popular romance novels.
[00:10:31] Speaker B: Okay. Okay.
[00:10:32] Speaker A: And it surrounds basically. Well, this first season is. And I think the second season, too.
Basically, there are these students that attend the fictional Briar College, and there is a team of really hot, really kind, very consensual hockey players.
And then there are girls, like, on the campus who, like, it's love. No great question. But it's, like, love stories for each of them with certain people. Now this season is about a girl that attends Briar College. She is very smart. She's very artistic. She's like a musician. She's, like, studying classic.
Classic music or whatever.
And she's on scholarship.
She gets news that, like the program because of Trump's budget cuts, they don't call Trump out by name, but you can basically put the pieces together. The budget cuts have come for Breyer College. Her scholarship's been impacted. So she's scrambling, trying to figure out what she can do. She sees that there is, like, this music writing competition, music composition competition that she wants to enter into because the prize money could close the gap with the scholarship funds.
She happens to be taking a class with a really, like, all star hockey player named Garrett. And Garrett is in need of. He knows that she's really smart in this class. In the philosophy class they're taking.
And he's not a dumb. He's not dumb at all.
[00:12:05] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:12:06] Speaker A: But he does need. He's taking this philosophy class. And I actually connected with this. I took a philosophy class. Courtney will remember this because we took it together. Took a philosophy class sophomore year of college. I don't know what the. These people were talking about. We. I could not tell them apart whatsoever. I was like, what is the truth? You Know what I mean? So this is, like, this guy's problem. Problem, too. He's like, what. What is Kierkegaard? Believe it. I'm like, brother, I don't know.
And so basically, he goes to her and he says, I would really like to, you know, maybe work together to get your mentorship so that I can pass this class. But I can also, like, help you out because I know that you have a crush on this musician down at, like, the local watering hole that's not giving you the time of day. But I know guys, and if they see us in a relationship together, he'll be interested in you. They embark on, like, this fake relationship kind of situation while also really kind of getting to know one another, and then it slowly turns into, like, a romance situation.
[00:13:05] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:13:05] Speaker A: And I'm. I'm locked in. I gotta say. I think it's fun. Yeah, there is. The girl has experienced trauma. Hannah is the main character. She's experienced trauma in her past.
And, you know, you kind of go into the show, I. I would say that I was, like, very kind of, like, on edge, being like, oh, my God, are these guys going to be just dicks about, like, whatever? Not at all. They are, like, talking with each other about, like, the importance of foreplay. Like, this girl comes home one night, she's really drunk, and she's, like, telling him she wants to have sex with him. He's like, I don't think you want to do this. Let's not do this.
[00:13:37] Speaker B: Oh, my God.
[00:13:38] Speaker A: Like, you'll.
[00:13:39] Speaker B: You.
[00:13:39] Speaker A: You'll understand in the morning. He does not sleep with her. When they finally have. And this is kind of spoiled. It's not spoilers, necessarily, but when they finally have, like, a sexual encounter with each other, old traumas kind of surface for her. And he's like, I'll back off of you. And then he's like, you know, talking to her about what she wants to do.
A little, you know, mutual but from across the room kind of situation is how they work this out.
[00:14:04] Speaker B: Oh, okay.
[00:14:07] Speaker A: I'll be updating, folks.
So now I'm deep in it, and, man, what a beautiful cast.
[00:14:18] Speaker B: Love it. I mean, it's got to be. Yeah.
[00:14:20] Speaker A: Beautiful cast. And, yeah, I'm having a good time with it.
[00:14:24] Speaker B: All right, I think I'll check. What is that? Check it out.
[00:14:26] Speaker A: It's the number one show on Amazon prime right now.
[00:14:28] Speaker B: Oh, on Amazon Prime. Okay. Okay.
[00:14:31] Speaker A: Now, is it the best show that you've ever seen? God, no. So if you go in there expecting that you're Gonna. Here's the thing. People are like, I texted Kevin about this and I was like, have you watched off season? He was like, I have not watched Heated Rivalry Light. No, I have not.
[00:14:44] Speaker B: Oh yeah, I've heard that. That's. Yeah. People are like, this is not the same.
[00:14:48] Speaker A: No, it's not the same. But at the same time, I just don't think any show is going to live up to.
[00:14:54] Speaker B: Right.
[00:14:54] Speaker A: Like, I don't think any of these shows that are adapted.
[00:14:57] Speaker B: No.
[00:14:58] Speaker A: Like by these. From these romance novels are going to hit the mark. Heated Rivalry is like such a, such a, just a one in a million situation.
[00:15:11] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:15:11] Speaker A: And it was made that way because of Connor's story, frankly. Like, Connor story came in there and, and completely knocked that out of the park.
[00:15:19] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:15:20] Speaker A: He didn't have to go that hard.
[00:15:21] Speaker B: No.
[00:15:21] Speaker A: And I don't think anybody would have expected that show to be so good. I think Jack Tierney did a great job directing it. Sure.
[00:15:27] Speaker B: Probably didn't expect it to be this crazy.
[00:15:29] Speaker A: No. Because if it had been acted by any kind of other unknown actor wouldn't have been. It would have been like kind of just one of these like throwaway shows that you just kind of kind of see. But he knocked it out of the park. I mean, Hudson Williams, whatever. He did his thing too.
[00:15:42] Speaker B: Whatever.
[00:15:43] Speaker A: But let's be honest, Connor's story carried that show on his back.
[00:15:46] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:15:47] Speaker A: Oh.
[00:15:47] Speaker B: I mean, I think it's not even just like shows that are based off of books. I, I think like most shows are not going to be that caliber.
[00:15:55] Speaker A: No.
[00:15:57] Speaker B: I think I told you I watched the worst show. It's not the worst show, but it's down there.
Not the, not the discount bin Nemesis. And I hate it because I've heard
[00:16:11] Speaker A: like, you know, there's so many good looking men in that show.
[00:16:14] Speaker B: Oh my God.
[00:16:15] Speaker A: You think it would have helped if you just put the TV on mute?
[00:16:19] Speaker B: You know what? Honestly? Maybe. Yeah. Because part of what was so irritating was the gender dynamics in it. You know, about like, you know, like him being the provider and the leader and the whatever. Meanwhile he's like not fucking doing anything. Like he's, he's. Surprise, surprise, he's married to a doctor. And the doctor's like, you're. You're gonna lead me. You're gonna. It's like you.
[00:16:42] Speaker A: They were saying that.
[00:16:43] Speaker B: Yeah. It was like part of it was that was. It was actually the other couple that was like the woman was like, I mean, I know you're the leader, but she did actually say she was like, yuck.
[00:16:54] Speaker A: I hate that.
[00:16:55] Speaker B: And her sister, her sister goes, you need a plan, and a man is not a plan.
[00:17:02] Speaker A: Hello.
[00:17:02] Speaker B: And I was like, okay. I love it.
[00:17:04] Speaker A: Hello. I love that saying that is in, like, the all star of the month of May sayings that I've heard. It's Amanda's not a plan. Amen, sister. I also heard a crush is just a lack of information.
[00:17:16] Speaker B: Love it.
[00:17:17] Speaker A: Top tier. Top tier.
[00:17:18] Speaker B: Amazing.
[00:17:19] Speaker A: Absolutely. Condensed, like 15 years of therapy into one thing. A crush is just a lack of information. Just give it time, girl. Just give it time. And then the other one that I heard today is it's the not a dreamed body if it's a nightmare to maintain.
Okay.
[00:17:35] Speaker B: I love it. Oh, yeah.
[00:17:37] Speaker A: Wow. Aren't you moved?
[00:17:38] Speaker B: I am moved. I love that.
[00:17:40] Speaker A: I, I. And that's, that's what I believe because I'm. It's just, it's getting harder as the years track on.
[00:17:46] Speaker B: As the years go by, it's harder to maintain.
[00:17:50] Speaker A: I'm like, well, this is somebody's dream.
Somebody's. Somebody's daydream. I don't know.
[00:17:58] Speaker B: Oh, my God. I love that, though. Is that great? Those are some great sayings.
[00:18:02] Speaker A: You should put them on bumper sticker.
[00:18:04] Speaker B: You really should.
[00:18:04] Speaker A: I think it'd be great.
[00:18:05] Speaker B: We should, like, have a saying of the week. Yeah.
[00:18:10] Speaker A: Three for the month of May right there.
[00:18:12] Speaker B: God.
Yeah. I don't know what else for here. You hear? Ye.
[00:18:16] Speaker A: I don't really have. That's really kind of been what's been taking up all of my time and attention is wrapping up the pit, which we love. Can't wait for season three to come out. And then starting off season.
[00:18:26] Speaker B: I love it. Yeah. Love it.
[00:18:28] Speaker A: Just. Just a girl, her dog in the off. Or did I say off season? Off campus.
[00:18:32] Speaker B: Off campus. Yeah. Did you ever see overcompensating? No, I don't think you did.
[00:18:37] Speaker A: I think I started, like, the first episode and I just didn't finish it. I need to go back. It's not that I didn't enjoy it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I did enjoy. I just never finished it.
[00:18:44] Speaker B: Yeah, I guess it's not really, like, classically a romance as much as it is, like, I don't know, like kind of a comedy.
[00:18:50] Speaker A: A comedy. Like a coming of age kind of situation.
[00:18:53] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah. But sex lives of college girls. That's the other one. That is, like, just so funny.
[00:18:59] Speaker A: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Mindy Kaling was on again. TV habits. Working from home of a 1990s, you know, working from home. Woman or stay at home. Mom, I was watching. I think it was Kelly Ripa and Marcusuelos today, and she was on there, you know, when I went out to LA a few years ago for my little trip, I got tickets to go see Jimmy Kimmel, and she was a guest there, too. She's following me.
[00:19:24] Speaker B: Really? Oh, my gosh.
[00:19:26] Speaker A: Great.
[00:19:26] Speaker B: She does look great. And, you know, I appreciate.
I appreciate her. I. I struggle with her.
[00:19:34] Speaker A: We appreciate you, sister.
[00:19:37] Speaker B: Respectfully. I struggle, though.
No, but she is. You know, I think I struggle in the same way that I struggle with a lot of, like, these famous comedians that, like, you know, it's giving, like, Harvard Lampoon. You know what I mean? Like, she went to the Ivy League. She's. Her baby daddy went to the Ivy League.
We know. Bj.
But there's, like, a little bit of that. That I'm. It just is, like, don't make it seem like you did it on your own, because you didn't.
[00:20:08] Speaker A: Yeah, Yeah.
[00:20:09] Speaker B: I don't know.
[00:20:10] Speaker A: Yeah. Cite your sources, you know, like, absolutely.
[00:20:14] Speaker B: Seriously, you're. Cite your benefactors.
[00:20:16] Speaker A: She's not on this list of comics.
[00:20:18] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:20:22] Speaker A: Okay. Well, I think that's it. I think that's all the people want to hear from us, honestly.
[00:20:26] Speaker B: They're like. They're done.
[00:20:28] Speaker A: Wrap it.
All right, well, this week, if you're back.
[00:20:32] Speaker B: Welcome, welcome.
[00:20:33] Speaker A: We've been. We've been saving your seat.
We are continuing our reread of A Court of Thorns and Roses, the first installment in the iconic series by Sarah J. Moss.
We, of course, are breaking it down book by book, piece by piece. I think this week we're like, chapters 21 to, like, 32.
[00:20:50] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:20:50] Speaker A: Right.
[00:20:50] Speaker B: About, like, 100 pages. Yeah.
[00:20:53] Speaker A: So whether you've read the series 10 times or have no clue what the hell's going on, which we don't either, there's something here for you, and we hope you.
We hope you'll enjoy.
[00:21:01] Speaker B: Right.
Well. Previously on.
[00:21:05] Speaker A: We're.
[00:21:05] Speaker B: I'm just gonna recap our journey. Our last journey.
[00:21:11] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:21:11] Speaker B: So we. We ended in the Spring Court.
Then there was kind of a lot of. We. We were introduced to Lucian and Alice. Love her. There was a lot of walking around, going on a lot of promenade.
[00:21:25] Speaker A: They're getting their steps in.
[00:21:26] Speaker B: They're getting their steps in. There's a lot of painting of flowers, you know, and.
And then that's kind of it. Like some monster.
[00:21:38] Speaker A: That's it.
[00:21:39] Speaker B: All right. It's like some monsters come out. And then.
And then she goes to fyre fest. Yeah. And meets A beautiful man.
[00:21:49] Speaker A: The most beautiful man she's ever seen.
[00:21:51] Speaker B: Most beautiful man she's ever seen.
And.
And then that's it.
[00:21:56] Speaker A: Then we're.
[00:21:56] Speaker B: We've come up to now.
[00:21:58] Speaker A: Our.
[00:21:59] Speaker B: Our episode now.
[00:22:00] Speaker A: Yeah, great. Yes. Like you said, Fire Fest. I liken it to Burning Man. It is just a chaotic situation where our girl Feyre's at. She's at the fire Fest.
And, yeah, she's still kind of in awe at this most beautiful man.
[00:22:14] Speaker B: And he's, like, making. He's like. He knows exactly who she. Well, I don't want to say that.
[00:22:21] Speaker A: Yeah, well.
But he is very amused with this girl.
[00:22:25] Speaker B: Yes. Yes. Yeah.
[00:22:26] Speaker A: And honestly, it's like a little bit of like a mouse being stuck in a snake trap. I mean, like, he. He could do anything to this girl whatsoever.
[00:22:33] Speaker B: He is just. And he is just laughing.
[00:22:35] Speaker A: He's enamored.
[00:22:36] Speaker B: Yeah. I love it. Yeah.
[00:22:37] Speaker A: You know, it's really interesting how he's written, too. I mean, he has written so well in terms of, like, just a very charming but, like, dangerously like, character.
[00:22:47] Speaker B: Yeah. Oh, he definitely is. Yeah. I mean, that whole scene, I was like, oh, well, let's see where he goes.
[00:22:53] Speaker A: Yeah. And then he, like, tries to take her somewhere.
[00:22:56] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, he. He says like, I'm. I like, I want to show you something.
[00:23:01] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:23:01] Speaker B: But then when she says no, he's like, okay, see you later.
[00:23:04] Speaker A: We love that. A consent king. I do wonder where he was trying to take her, though.
[00:23:10] Speaker B: Yeah, I don't know. That's a good question. Maybe the safety I think I had maybe. Yeah. I think when I read that, I had a thought. But, yeah, I'll have to go back maybe, like, away from Tamlin.
[00:23:22] Speaker A: Yeah. He's like, don't get with this dope. Meanwhile, her man is in a cave somewhere.
Somebody or about to.
[00:23:30] Speaker B: You know what I hated is, like, then when they. When, you know, she went for a midnight snack like we talked about, and then she gets back to the house,
[00:23:36] Speaker A: she's spotted in the crowd.
Lucian drags her back to the house, basically by the hair.
[00:23:41] Speaker B: Yeah. I think. Well, I think he carries it. Yeah.
[00:23:44] Speaker A: She gets back there, she didn't have any fairy wine. I mean, it was a bust of a night.
[00:23:47] Speaker B: I know, I know.
[00:23:48] Speaker A: She gets home and she's like, my stomach's rumbling.
[00:23:51] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:23:51] Speaker A: I just had part of the 4 for 35 meal at whole Foods. This is not going to satisfy me. Some green beans, some Brussels sprouts, a little bit of salmon. I need something else. She's sneaking out for A couple of, in my case, El Fudge cookies.
[00:24:05] Speaker B: Yeah. Meanwhile, they had both told her, stay in your room. So she can't follow directions.
[00:24:11] Speaker A: So she's like, I. I'm not adhering to these rules.
[00:24:14] Speaker B: God. And then she runs in to an animal. I mean, Tamlin is an animal. And you know what he says to her? He goes.
He explains to her that he. Whatever he. Somebody in the cave.
[00:24:26] Speaker A: Well, this is the thing. He comes back and he's like, I was looking for you.
[00:24:29] Speaker B: He was. She goes, I was looking for you. And then he was like, didn't he
[00:24:32] Speaker A: say, I sented you?
[00:24:34] Speaker B: Yes, E.
And. And she.
And then he was like. And the girl, he picked him is like. She asked me not to be gentle. And he's like, I would have been gentle with you. And I was like, what the fuck? Are you admitting to assaults right now?
[00:24:53] Speaker A: Then they just completely fall into a full fledged DV situation.
[00:24:58] Speaker B: Absolutely, yes. I mean, that is like the beginning of it. And then she, like, he bites her. She's got a bruise on her neck and she, like, wears it proudly. I'm like, that's not just a hickey.
[00:25:08] Speaker A: Like, that was.
No.
[00:25:10] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:25:11] Speaker A: She gets up the next morning, she goes down to lunch. She's like wearing it proudly.
[00:25:15] Speaker B: It's like. Oh, I don't know.
[00:25:18] Speaker A: Very strange.
[00:25:19] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:25:19] Speaker A: Those two.
[00:25:20] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:25:21] Speaker A: But their love grows somehow.
[00:25:23] Speaker B: Their love somehow grows. Yeah. It's not very interesting.
[00:25:26] Speaker A: No. You know, so they're gallivanting around the. The.
The plantation.
[00:25:32] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:25:33] Speaker A: Essentially.
[00:25:34] Speaker B: Let's be honest. It is.
[00:25:35] Speaker A: I mean, it was at one time a working plantation for sure.
[00:25:38] Speaker B: Humans were the. Yeah.
[00:25:39] Speaker A: No, absolutely.
And I. Falling more in love. Lucian. Lucian, however, is like me in the background being like, spare me.
[00:25:46] Speaker B: Yeah. Lucian is like, what? Like, what is this? And because honestly, it's like not very believable. Like, it's kind of. It's like it's forced. It's very forced. And she's giving all of 19.
[00:26:00] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:26:01] Speaker B: Yeah. Not great.
[00:26:03] Speaker A: Not great.
There is an interesting moment, though. I know we weren't talking about, like, the moments that define sort of the section that we skipped over. They.
There's a lot of gore in this. This part of the book.
[00:26:14] Speaker B: The gory part, I think you were talking about was the head on the spike.
[00:26:17] Speaker A: Yeah, the head on the spike.
[00:26:18] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:26:18] Speaker A: And of course, Lucian has to go get it. Retrieving.
[00:26:20] Speaker B: Yeah. Lucian, whose head is it?
Well, I think it was.
I mean, some of that. The night court put there.
[00:26:29] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:26:29] Speaker B: I'm not sure. It doesn't sound like it had a mask on it, so it wasn't. Probably wasn't from the Supreme Court.
[00:26:35] Speaker A: I gotta say, in all of this, like, I keep forgetting that these people have masks.
[00:26:38] Speaker B: I know. Me too. And then when they mention it, it's like, ew.
[00:26:42] Speaker A: I'm like, he's cle. This.
[00:26:44] Speaker B: Honestly. I know.
[00:26:45] Speaker A: It's wrapped in silk and jewels. It's nasty. It stinks to the high heavens.
[00:26:49] Speaker B: Yeah, Yeah. I mean, you should not be wearing that on your face if it's not part of your body. Yeah.
[00:26:56] Speaker A: Let's see. Yes. The painting.
Lucian and Tamlin continue to just hide information about what's going on. The vibes are off throughout this entire thing. People are dying.
[00:27:07] Speaker B: She's not getting it.
[00:27:09] Speaker A: She's not putting two and two together.
[00:27:10] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah.
[00:27:13] Speaker A: Let's see.
There is a summer solstice.
[00:27:17] Speaker B: The summer solstice, right? Yeah. Which it's basically like, oh, no, it's not Burning Man.
[00:27:24] Speaker A: It's better. It. It's Lollapalooza.
[00:27:26] Speaker B: It's Lollapalooza.
[00:27:27] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:27:27] Speaker B: Let's say it's Lalapalooza. It's. What's that one in the spring?
[00:27:32] Speaker A: Midsummer.
[00:27:33] Speaker B: No. Coachella.
[00:27:34] Speaker A: Coachella. Yeah.
[00:27:37] Speaker B: Anyway, there's not much notable things. Not much notable happens besides him playing to her. Finding him playing.
[00:27:44] Speaker A: She doesn't even know that this is a skill that he has, is it?
[00:27:47] Speaker B: No.
[00:27:48] Speaker A: He disappears on her yet again.
[00:27:51] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:27:51] Speaker A: She doesn't know what he's doing. Then she goes out. First of all, she gets drunk off her ass on fairy wine, which sounds like it's just absolutely the craziest hallucinogen. Hallucinogenic.
[00:28:00] Speaker B: Yeah, basically. Yeah.
[00:28:02] Speaker A: She gets out there, she starts doing her dance. I'm like, it's not giving rhythm.
[00:28:05] Speaker B: No, no, I know.
It is definitely not. And then she's like, I was so attracted to this, you know, the fiddle playing or whatever. And then all of a sudden, turns out it's Tamlin.
[00:28:16] Speaker A: Yeah. He's like, playing first chair fiddle.
[00:28:20] Speaker B: High Lord. Here. Out here playing the fiddle.
[00:28:22] Speaker A: Budget cuts.
If you want to party, you got to do it yourself. He said, let me dust this fiddle off. So he gets out there, and, I mean, she is just talking about, like, he is playing this fiddle. It's like. It's. It's like the Devil Went down to Georgia is basically like how he's out there playing that fiddle, and she is getting more and more aroused by the minute.
[00:28:40] Speaker B: It's so weird. It's so weird.
[00:28:43] Speaker A: Like, to a fever pitch. They work it up to and Then finally he, like, whisks her off the dance floor.
[00:28:49] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:28:49] Speaker A: She's ready to go again.
[00:28:51] Speaker B: Yeah. She's like, we're gonna go back out there and dance, right?
[00:28:54] Speaker A: He's like, no, I. Let's go out here in this field and dance with these ghosts in the moonlights. The willow, the will o wisps. And so as. I mean, that's the most romantic thing I think any girl could think about
[00:29:09] Speaker B: is, I guess, dancing with ghosts.
[00:29:11] Speaker A: Yeah. They head back to the house and I guess they get it on. You know, I skipped this part. I'll go ahead and let you just tell me what happened. I mean, intercourse.
[00:29:19] Speaker B: It's.
It's really.
[00:29:22] Speaker A: Whoa.
[00:29:22] Speaker B: Okay, so first, the. First the brunch happens. So that's just like they have their kiss or whatever.
[00:29:28] Speaker A: Oh, very interesting. Sorry, I thought that. I thought that the fiddle got everybody just this up.
[00:29:32] Speaker B: I mean, it did, but then he was like, no, we can't. Something like that.
[00:29:36] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:29:37] Speaker B: And then the brunch thing happened. Basically, like, our man comes back.
She's hiding from him. All of a sudden, he, like, taps on her mind with his talon tipped. Hand tipped. Yep. And then. And then, of course, Hamlin goes into a rage.
[00:29:54] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:29:55] Speaker B: And starts throwing around. And then they have sex. And it's really kind of weird. It's like disconnected and awkward. And he's like, yeah, like, as you texted me, it's like. Seems very unclean with the mask situation.
[00:30:11] Speaker A: He goes down on her wearing a mask.
[00:30:12] Speaker B: Wearing a mask.
What's stuck in those rupees?
[00:30:16] Speaker A: No, I can't. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It smells crazy in there.
[00:30:20] Speaker B: Yes. Yes. I mean, the whole thing at all times.
[00:30:24] Speaker A: You know what I thought was crazy also? I mean, like, obviously I skimmed over the sex scenes, but, like, Feyre acting like she's a porn star out here. I know.
[00:30:31] Speaker B: I. I know, I know. She, like. She's like, I put my leg up on the. On the bed and then I spread it wide. And I was like, oh, my God.
[00:30:41] Speaker A: I'm like, is this what you were doing with Isaac Hal in the barn? Yeah, in the haystacks.
[00:30:48] Speaker B: I know, I know.
Also, like, let's not forget he's an animal.
Like, he's it. His talents came out.
[00:30:56] Speaker A: Well, you said that he used a talent to cut her panties off.
[00:30:58] Speaker B: He cut her panties.
[00:30:59] Speaker A: He.
[00:30:59] Speaker B: I. I swear to God, I was like, this is disgusting. This is an animal.
[00:31:05] Speaker A: I hate it.
[00:31:05] Speaker B: Anyway, it's not great.
[00:31:07] Speaker A: He's just not giving me.
He's just not.
He has no Riz.
[00:31:13] Speaker B: He's got no Riz. No Riz. Yeah.
[00:31:16] Speaker A: And the two of them just feel like they're falling in love because of proximity as opposed to, like, genuinely liking each other.
[00:31:24] Speaker B: I don't think that they genuinely like each other. I think there's, like, a weird, like, kind of like, in Beauty and the Beast. Like, there's a weird, like, what is that called? Stockholm syndrome.
[00:31:36] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:31:36] Speaker B: You know, like, she kind of falls in love with her captor.
[00:31:39] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:31:39] Speaker B: And he's just doing it because of the whole. The story that we hear about.
[00:31:43] Speaker A: Well, we also learned, too, that, like, there's so many fairies walking around that she's not seen for so much time. She don't know who she's around.
[00:31:51] Speaker B: I know these fairs have been like, who the. Like, this girl is. Is such a dumbass.
[00:31:56] Speaker A: Yes. Because he uses some magical power to, like, glamour her, to, like, shield her view from, like, all the, like, magical creatures walking around.
[00:32:04] Speaker B: It's not giving consent.
[00:32:05] Speaker A: No, it's not. My girl is walking around here dumb.
[00:32:08] Speaker B: Yeah, I know.
[00:32:10] Speaker A: Like, completely oblivious to what's going on.
So once our man. Okay. Yes. So our man comes to that brunch.
Man comes to the brunch, and he makes a scene.
Everybody's having a nice brunch. It's a nice spread. It's fruit, it's waffles, it's bacon. They're. They're living.
[00:32:27] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:32:28] Speaker A: Our man comes in there, and he's like, knock, knock. Clock's running down the. The rent is due.
[00:32:35] Speaker B: Amarantha.
[00:32:36] Speaker A: Yeah. And so, obviously, because Feyre doesn't know what the. Is going on, she's like, what the Are they talking about? And why is this dangerous man coming in there? And they act really weird when he comes into the brunch and. Because, like, Lucian uses basically all the power he has in the world, his physical strength.
[00:32:52] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:32:53] Speaker A: To basically make her invisible and push her back as far as he can against the wall.
And then they have a show. The boys have a showdown. Basically, they let their grievances fly.
[00:33:05] Speaker B: They do. And then Rhysand comes out on top. You know why this reminded me of boar on the floor?
[00:33:10] Speaker A: Oh.
[00:33:11] Speaker B: When he. You know, the boar on the floor in succession. When he goes on the floor.
[00:33:14] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:33:15] Speaker B: When he made Tamlin put his head down, like, lay flat on the ground.
[00:33:22] Speaker A: Feyre, I would have had the ick. I'd have been like, there's no coming back from this.
[00:33:25] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, no, I know.
[00:33:27] Speaker A: You like bowing down and groveling to some man. It's not gonna work. For me anymore. I'm sorry.
[00:33:31] Speaker B: But honestly, it doesn't make either of them look good.
[00:33:34] Speaker A: It doesn't make either of them look good. But I would not. I mean, I'm. I'm. I can't come back to this grown man on knees, putting his head down on the floor. It's just not gonna work.
[00:33:43] Speaker B: Putting his mask down.
[00:33:45] Speaker A: Oh, God.
[00:33:46] Speaker B: I know, I know. But, yeah, they did. They had a little rumble.
[00:33:49] Speaker A: They had a little rumble. And so then Rhysand's like, okay, listen, don't pay your bill after the 5th of the month, because we'll come for you. We'll take out your kneecaps. And then he starts to leave. And as he's leaving, he notices that there are three place settings as. Instead of two. And he goes, you tried to test me in here? He's really offended that they tried to hide.
[00:34:10] Speaker B: He is. He is.
[00:34:12] Speaker A: He.
[00:34:12] Speaker B: He's like. He sniffs the wine. He's like, you gotta be fucking kidding. Yeah. He goes, yeah.
[00:34:16] Speaker A: You thought that you could lie to me? He turns around, and I was like, I love a man who's like, you know what the it is in here? I'm not gonna do this. And so then he pushes Lucien out of the way and sees our girl.
[00:34:30] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:30] Speaker A: And amused. But also like, I don't really want you seeing me like this. This is not a good situation.
[00:34:35] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:36] Speaker A: I've gotta leave.
[00:34:37] Speaker B: Except he says something to her, and maybe this is like, what the girls are. Are talking about when they don't like him is he says something about, like, he calls her mortal trash or something.
[00:34:47] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:34:48] Speaker B: And yeah, I didn't like that.
[00:34:50] Speaker A: I didn't like that either. But part of me is also like, as we come to learn.
Yeah.
[00:34:56] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:34:56] Speaker A: It probably killed him to say it. He's probably like, I'm not making a good impression. I know not put my best foot.
[00:35:01] Speaker B: But he knows.
[00:35:02] Speaker A: He knows he's okay. And then also, I think it's important to note, he asks her what her name is.
[00:35:09] Speaker B: Yes. Right. And she gives the false name.
[00:35:12] Speaker A: She's like, clara Batter. Is that her name? Battle.
[00:35:14] Speaker B: Clara Bador.
[00:35:15] Speaker A: Bedor. Clara Bador.
[00:35:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:35:17] Speaker A: Knowing that, she's like, I can't. I need to tell this man a fake name.
[00:35:20] Speaker B: I know. And you know what? He could have, like, she said he could have just, like, went into her mind and figured out her name. And so, yeah, I think there was part of him that just didn't want to know.
[00:35:31] Speaker A: He didn't want to know. And probably also knowing that she was smart enough Enough to lie.
[00:35:35] Speaker B: Right? Right.
[00:35:36] Speaker A: You know what I mean?
[00:35:37] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:35:38] Speaker A: Okay, so then they. As you've imagined, not. Not the one we want to. Want to have, like, and, no, he's got to go. He's got to go back to wherever he's coming from.
But Tamlin and Feyre basically had their. Their jaunt with the panty cutting. And then he rolls over and looks at her and goes, you gotta go.
[00:35:57] Speaker B: Yeah, I know. He goes, I. I can't stay the night. And you know what? You gotta go back home tomorrow.
[00:36:02] Speaker A: And I was, like, triggered.
[00:36:03] Speaker B: I know. I was like, holy. She was like, are you leaving?
[00:36:06] Speaker A: Like, I just bust it wide open, and you're setting me up. Christ.
[00:36:10] Speaker B: She's like, I just had sex with a beast.
Oh, my God.
[00:36:16] Speaker A: She's like, I'm gonna need some time.
[00:36:17] Speaker B: God, you're trying to boy me.
[00:36:19] Speaker A: Yeah.
Yeah. He's like, no, you got to go. It's not safe here for you to go. So she reluctant. I mean, he tells her this, and then they again, I think, yeah, they again.
[00:36:30] Speaker B: And then he says, I love you.
And then he says that he puts her in the carriage and he says, I love you again. And she's like, why didn't I say I love you back? Cause you don't love him because you
[00:36:39] Speaker A: don't fucking love him. So then she's sent home to her family, who is living high on the hog.
[00:36:46] Speaker B: Elaine is elated.
[00:36:48] Speaker A: She loves it.
And she. You know, we learn earlier in the book that basically, Tamlin had created, like, a really fantastic alibi for Feyre in her absence and also puts her family up in, like, this fabulous, like, mansion by the sea. And nobody remembers that they were living in squalor basically, like, two weeks ago.
[00:37:09] Speaker B: Or they do remember, but they don't say.
[00:37:11] Speaker A: They're like, yeah, I'm sorry.
I came up by my own bootstraps. Thank you. This is wealth. This is wealth that I did on my own.
And so, basically, Feyre pulls up. They come out in, like, the finest silks, finest, finest, you know, materials. They're like, oh, sister, how is our dying aunt? Because there's some, like, fictional aunt somewhere that she's supposedly taking care of. And they get out of the carriage, and here's Feyre coming out of there
[00:37:39] Speaker B: with, like, trunks of money, diamonds and rubies.
[00:37:43] Speaker A: Clothes.
[00:37:44] Speaker B: Yeah. Weird little hat on. Like, she's going to a royal wedding.
[00:37:48] Speaker A: A little fascinator. We love it. And Elena's like, I can't believe it. We have to have a feast. Her daddy's Upstairs counting money. And Nesta is like, is. You're not gonna run this past me.
[00:37:59] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:38:00] Speaker A: She's like, something in the milk ain't clean and I want to know what it is. We find out. Nessa is just so nasty that she's like, you can't glamour me. I know what the. Going on all the time.
[00:38:12] Speaker B: I know. Pharaoh was like, jesus. I like, you can't penetrate her.
[00:38:16] Speaker A: No.
[00:38:17] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:38:17] Speaker A: She said my. My mind is like an iron trap. So she's like, I remember everything. Literally everything. Y' all tried to make me cr. It seemed like it was crazy or like that. Like I wasn't remembering things clearly. No, I know.
[00:38:28] Speaker B: Yeah, I know.
[00:38:29] Speaker A: And then it's revealed a sister's love. She went after her to find her. This is like the one time in this series where I felt like, okay, yes.
[00:38:36] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:38:37] Speaker A: I felt like this was a little bit of a turning point with that center. Her behavior. Yeah. But she's. She turns nasty again.
[00:38:42] Speaker B: She turns nasty. And honestly, one of the reasons I think she actually went after him or her was like, you can't trick me. You know what I mean? Because she was mad that she was tricked and so she was trying to prove herself. Right?
[00:38:52] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:38:53] Speaker B: I don't think it was anything about she save her.
[00:38:56] Speaker A: That's a good point.
I mean, that's a good point.
[00:39:00] Speaker B: Hate to say it, but yeah, she's. I mean. And I don't know, like, I. I think she does grow a heart maybe, but it's not there yet.
[00:39:08] Speaker A: So as they're having the celebratory Just Family dinner to celebrate Feyre coming back, it's revealed that Clara Bador.
[00:39:16] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:39:16] Speaker A: And her family got burned down.
And they can't find Clara's body.
[00:39:20] Speaker B: They can't find her. Yeah. Y. And so of course, Papa wants to buy the.
[00:39:24] Speaker A: The.
[00:39:24] Speaker B: The land.
[00:39:25] Speaker A: He goes, let's just build on it.
Generation. Generational wealth.
[00:39:30] Speaker B: We're going to invest. We're going to invest.
[00:39:32] Speaker A: We are gentrifying this neighborhood. Thank you.
[00:39:35] Speaker B: This family just died in a fire. But we're going to take advantage right now.
[00:39:39] Speaker A: Has that Cruz in there. It'll be fine. And we'll just clean it up. So then of course, Favor's like, oh, what the. Because I gave this girl's name out and so she knows what she has to do. She's like, I. I can't live like this. I can't like, bury my head in the sand. I've got figure it. I gotta figure it. Figure it out. So Nesta's like, yeah, you do need to figure it out. Get your ass back out there and do what you got to do.
[00:40:00] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:40:01] Speaker A: So she says her goodbyes, she gives them all her money. She basically goes and donates some money into the town, in the village, and then she takes her talents back to Prythian. When she. It's like several days of a journey.
[00:40:16] Speaker B: It's a several day journey. Yeah. She's like, really? Yeah. Apparently it's a very harrowing adventure, but they skip over that. So we're back in Prythean.
[00:40:24] Speaker A: Yeah, we're back. We're. We're back, baby. We get in there, we pass the magical thresholds, and shit is not sweet. On the other side of that magical
[00:40:32] Speaker B: border,
[00:40:35] Speaker A: there has been a massacre here that has happened.
Things are torn up, things are burned, things are smashed. And Tamlin and Lucian are nowhere to be found as is. There's basically no sign of life around.
[00:40:49] Speaker B: It's the wizard of Oz in there. Like, you can't go home again.
[00:40:52] Speaker A: No, no, I'm sorry.
Our girl gets into the house. She starts screaming around for her man. She gets no answer. I'm like, this is survival instincts on a zero.
She don't know what the is in there.
She's like, I'm gonna save my boyfriend.
She's in there. Who should come out but Alice. Alice is like, I definitely don't have time for this. I gotta get my and go.
[00:41:17] Speaker B: Alice is like, what the are you doing here?
[00:41:20] Speaker A: She's been in hiding. She's like, I'm trying to walk around and salvage what I can. Some wares that maybe I could sell, maybe that I can barter.
[00:41:29] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:41:32] Speaker A: She's like, I've got a bunch of things that I've harvested and pickled.
[00:41:36] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:41:37] Speaker A: And she's like, let me get a couple of these silver. Silver things that I can maybe like, you know, pawn, get some money for. Because shit's crazy. It's going down.
So for the first time, of course, it's a woman that's telling the truth.
[00:41:50] Speaker B: Of course.
[00:41:51] Speaker A: Feyre is like, I need to know what's going on. Alex is like, you can't handle the truth. Favorite's like, I need to know what it is. Alice is like, sweet sister, you don't know what's going on. Favor's like, tell me. And Alice is like, I got 30 minutes.
[00:42:01] Speaker B: Yeah, yeah, yeah. She's like, couldn't suffer in her satchel. And she's like, fine, let's multitask. Yeah.
[00:42:06] Speaker A: Follow me.
[00:42:07] Speaker B: Y.
[00:42:07] Speaker A: So as she's walking through this castle and like, picking up things here and there, she like, reveals the drama of this curse that has befallen everybody in Prythian.
[00:42:19] Speaker B: Y.
[00:42:19] Speaker A: And it's. It's a sordid tell.
[00:42:21] Speaker B: It really is. I mean, it's. She packed a lot in there in a few pages. Yes, it is. Yeah. It's a pretty crazy saga. Yes, I would say.
[00:42:31] Speaker A: Okay, so centuries ago, there was a war that basically broke out. And basically, big old war to essential. It was about land and it was about slavery. Essential human slavery.
And there is another land across from Prythian where there is a king, Hyburn.
[00:42:51] Speaker B: Hybern.
[00:42:51] Speaker A: And he very much is like, on the side of these people need to be slaves. And that's all that they're. I need to hear about it.
[00:42:58] Speaker B: That a colonialist.
[00:42:59] Speaker A: Yeah, exactly. And so he has this, like, what, she's like an emissary of his?
[00:43:05] Speaker B: I think so, yeah. I don't even know what the emissary means.
[00:43:08] Speaker A: I don't either. But anyway, in this war, she's a bad person and she fights along with her sister, and her sister ends up falling in love with a human warrior.
[00:43:20] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:43:20] Speaker A: Essentially General.
And she sees the best in them. Who among us has never fallen prey to a general General?
[00:43:30] Speaker B: We've all been in our hyper masculine stage.
[00:43:33] Speaker A: And he basically is using her to get secrets of what the. What the Fae want in this war. And then he. Once he gets what he wants, he essentially tortures her slowly and kills her.
[00:43:45] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:43:45] Speaker A: And Amarantha is like on a war path because you killed my sister. I mean, she. They said she would have brought the skies down.
[00:43:52] Speaker B: Right, right.
[00:43:52] Speaker A: Because of this. So Amarantha captures this human and basically cuts his eye out and stores it in like a ring, right?
[00:44:00] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:44:00] Speaker A: Or like a piece of jewelry.
[00:44:01] Speaker B: Yes. Yeah.
[00:44:02] Speaker A: She.
[00:44:02] Speaker B: Well, at this point, I think we just hear that she kills him.
[00:44:05] Speaker A: Okay.
[00:44:06] Speaker B: But.
[00:44:07] Speaker A: But it is something we do know that some bad fate has befallen him because it's like. Like a fate worse than death almost. Because people are like, well, you don't want what happened to Jurian.
[00:44:15] Speaker B: Right.
[00:44:16] Speaker A: Happening.
[00:44:16] Speaker B: Right, right, right.
[00:44:17] Speaker A: So anyway, the war ends. There's a treaty that's drawn up. Everybody's kind of where they need to be human and people are let go. Some are killed, some, you know, it's just a. It's a bad situation.
[00:44:28] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:44:29] Speaker A: So then everybody's where they need to be. Here comes Amarantha again, years later on, like a peace mission to make peace with all of the high lords and Prythian. So basically, she spends all this time basically going around doing, like, a mission trip.
[00:44:43] Speaker B: Diplomat. Yeah. Diplomatic. Yeah.
[00:44:45] Speaker A: And being like, look at just like, you know, let's open trade routes.
[00:44:49] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:44:49] Speaker A: Let's do all these things. And people are, like, slowly but surely starting to trust her the whole time.
She has a growing crush on Tamlin, who she's known since he was like, a baby.
She's, like, much older than Tamlin.
[00:45:04] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:45:04] Speaker A: And so she has her sight set on him. He does not want her.
[00:45:07] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:45:07] Speaker A: He's not interested in being a high lord. His dad is a slave runner. He's also, like, you know, a high lord.
Tamlin just wants to be out here, like, wielding swords. He has no interest in being a high lord.
[00:45:18] Speaker B: He doesn't really have the mind for it.
[00:45:20] Speaker A: No. God bless him. He does not.
So anyway.
[00:45:25] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:45:25] Speaker A: Yes. So she keeps trying it. Finally, Lucien, you know, his friend who's been hired as his, like, little, you know, right hand man, diplomat, is sent there to basically broker an arrangement with Amarantha to be like, let's, like, maybe stop pursuing him for sex. Let's, like, maybe figure out a deal where we can do that.
She ain't feeling it. He basically cusses her out. She turns around and basically slices this man's face open and steals his eyes,
[00:45:52] Speaker B: scoops it out with her fingernail.
[00:45:54] Speaker A: He runs back to the spring court, and it's the worst thing he's ever seen, mind you. This is a. This is like a generous. This is like a world renowned warrior and he's like, hurling in the bushes. Yeah.
[00:46:04] Speaker B: The Tamlin is like, I can't see that.
[00:46:05] Speaker A: I can't do it. I can't do it.
And so hearing a little bit of that backstory with Lucian is just so sad.
[00:46:11] Speaker B: I know. It's very sad.
[00:46:13] Speaker A: I know his mouth got him in trouble. I love. I love how snarky and, like, witty he is. But she wasn't having Covenant. And so basically, I think, is somewhat of an apology for how that went down and to, like, as a show of, like, you know, I want to have peace with the spring. Spring corps and unity among all the courts. She hosts a masquerade ball.
[00:46:37] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:46:37] Speaker A: And it's the. Everybody's courts are invited. That should have been everybody's red flag, that.
[00:46:42] Speaker B: Yeah. Wait, was it everybody's courts or was it just the spring court?
[00:46:45] Speaker A: I thought it was everybody about these courts, but it.
[00:46:48] Speaker B: Well, but the spring court was the only ones that ended up with the masks on, though. That was my question.
[00:46:54] Speaker A: Yeah, I had a question. About this, because it sounded like I read something and I was like, is it all the courts, or is it just. Just the Spring Court? Because all other High Lords were there.
[00:47:03] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:47:04] Speaker A: And I thought, and their courts.
[00:47:05] Speaker B: Okay, so maybe it was that she was like, okay, the Spring Court is gonna. They're the only ones that are gonna wear the masks just because of. Of she's like, I up.
[00:47:14] Speaker A: We'll clear about. We'll get clear on this. Yes. But, yeah, it's all the High Lord. So our man Rhysand is there.
And were his people there? I thought that, like, they were there, and then he sent them out right when was starting to go down. Oh, maybe.
[00:47:27] Speaker B: Yeah, we'll have to. I can see that, though.
[00:47:29] Speaker A: My man is like, I'm gonna do whatever is necessary to save my people. Not Tamlin, though, anyway. So everybody I love a reason, like,
[00:47:36] Speaker B: comes in, is like, you've been just sitting on your ass for the last 50.
[00:47:39] Speaker A: You know what I've been doing?
[00:47:40] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah.
[00:47:40] Speaker A: I've been busting it wide open.
[00:47:46] Speaker B: I've been under the mountain.
[00:47:49] Speaker A: I haven't seen light in a month of Sundays. And you're over here growing hydrangeas.
[00:47:55] Speaker B: Seriously. And just, like, you know, brooding around your plantation.
[00:47:59] Speaker A: I can't do it. So anyway, they're at this party and things are going great, and. And she, Amarantha, has put a potion in the wine or the drink or whatever that steals, like, the most core power of each of the high lords. So they're operating at, like, 10 strength. They got, like, 10 battery life in here, and they don't even know it.
[00:48:19] Speaker B: If that.
[00:48:19] Speaker A: Yeah, if that. And so all of a sudden, she's like, surprise.
You ain't going home. You're coming with me. And so basically, she has trapped all of these people under the mountain, and she is releasing, like, the worst of the worst fairies or, like, criminals among us to go.
[00:48:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:48:39] Speaker A: She basically overrun their courts. And then eventually, the human lands. Yeah, it's a takeover.
[00:48:45] Speaker B: The Ator, the Naga. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[00:48:48] Speaker A: The worst of the worst.
[00:48:50] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:48:51] Speaker A: And so Feyre hears this, and she goes, bet I'm on it.
[00:48:56] Speaker B: Thanks for timing.
[00:48:58] Speaker A: She goes, I'm clear. I'm clear. I, I got it. Show me the way.
[00:49:01] Speaker B: Let me go save him. I'm gonna go save him.
[00:49:04] Speaker A: And Alice is like, turn back.
Alice is like, are you sure? What's abandoned hope, all ye who enter here.
You're 19 years old. Your whole life's ahead of you. Alice is like, I've accepted my fate, girl. I, I, I Got somewhere to be.
[00:49:18] Speaker B: She's like, I'm going to run. I'm going to run. I packed my stuff.
[00:49:21] Speaker A: She's like, it's. It's not gonna get any better than this. This.
[00:49:24] Speaker B: But you know what? Then there was something that was like.
That was like. Alice was like, there's something else I can't tell you because she. You know, she. Apparently they were. They were bound and gagged. They couldn't tell.
Reveal anything. But now, like, the spell is over.
And so. But there is one thing, and I. We don't know what it is that she can't reveal to Feyre.
And I honestly can't even remember what it is.
[00:49:52] Speaker A: I don't either. It's so crazy that at, like, the 44, like, the. The 11th hour and 59th minute of the 49th year, Amarantha was like, I'm at your door.
[00:50:04] Speaker B: Yeah, that was amazing.
[00:50:06] Speaker A: She said, I got my goons here. We're doing it.
And so. Yeah. And so this whole time, Feyre is also, like, blaming herself for not telling him she loved him. Because apparently she learned. Turns.
[00:50:15] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:50:16] Speaker A: That that would have broken the spell. And, like, everybody could have gone home. Okay. Because that is the thing. Amarantha, at this masquerade party, told Tamlin. She was like, if you could get a human girl to fall in love with you and tell you that she's in love with you, genuinely, out of the goodness of her heart, without ever having seen your face, because I'm gonna weld this mask to it. You best believe.
[00:50:38] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:50:40] Speaker A: And not. And. And also, she has to kill. Right? A theory, like, on her own accord, without it. Hated ye with hate in her heart. Without there being, like, an attack in which she's, like, protecting herself. She, like, put all these rules on him.
[00:50:54] Speaker B: I mean, because I think she was like. She was like, come on, Tamlin. He was like, I'd rather be with a human. And so then she. But you know what's crazy? We didn't even talk about this. What about Tamlin sending his men out for slaughter?
What the hell? Sending all of them on suicide missions every day.
[00:51:15] Speaker A: I'm ready.
[00:51:16] Speaker B: Jesus.
[00:51:17] Speaker A: You know, let's pour one out for Andrus and Claire
[00:51:22] Speaker B: and her family.
[00:51:25] Speaker A: Everybody catching strays because Tamlin can't get the job done.
[00:51:29] Speaker B: Jesus Christ, Tamlin. You know, you don't even, like, come on, man.
[00:51:36] Speaker A: Can he be like. Couldn't he write it down? He couldn't write say you love me on a piece of paper.
[00:51:41] Speaker B: Right? Exactly. Or. Or couldn't he do what Rhysand is doing right now and just kind of submit to her until he can kill her in the middle of the night. Like, come on. What do you think Melania wants to do?
[00:51:53] Speaker A: She thinks about every day.
Yeah. You know what a nail biter of an ending on this one.
[00:52:00] Speaker B: Yeah. I mean, and then she goes into that cave.
[00:52:04] Speaker A: She goes, let me get my backpack on.
Here we are. We're a tomb raider.
[00:52:09] Speaker B: I got my backpack. I got.
[00:52:12] Speaker A: She's got a couple snacks in here.
She's like, I certainly hope I don't run into any signs that I don't know what's going on.
[00:52:19] Speaker B: I hope I don't get in a fight.
[00:52:21] Speaker A: What song is that?
[00:52:22] Speaker B: Back to School. Back to School.
[00:52:24] Speaker A: That's.
[00:52:25] Speaker B: It's from Billy Madison.
[00:52:26] Speaker A: Oh, love that.
[00:52:29] Speaker B: Oh my God.
She's gonna get no fight.
[00:52:33] Speaker A: Way worse than that. Jesus.
[00:52:35] Speaker B: Alice is like.
Alice is like, well, you're gonna die. Like, let me just tell you, you're gonna die. But there are a couple things you should know. Don't trust anybody.
[00:52:44] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:52:45] Speaker B: Not even your Tamlin. And what else does she say?
Like, nobody is what. It's what they seem.
Yeah. I don't know.
[00:52:56] Speaker A: Just a whole bunch of rules. She's like, I'm not gonna remember that.
[00:52:59] Speaker B: You know what I was thinking? Tamlin is giving a fae with cte.
[00:53:07] Speaker A: You're just gonna throw it out there?
[00:53:08] Speaker B: I'm just gonna throw it out there. I mean, when I read all about like all of just like him raging and throwing shit around, I was like giving CTE.
[00:53:16] Speaker A: Giving CTE.
[00:53:17] Speaker B: Yeah. Which honestly, 500 years of concussions, that's gonna do it.
[00:53:21] Speaker A: Absolutely.
[00:53:22] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:53:23] Speaker A: God bless.
[00:53:24] Speaker B: I mean, it's still. It was so interesting when we like, we're at Clark's birthday and talking to his friend because I think like as a like collectively the girls have, you know, like read all these books and then now we're rereading them and in the age like post Epstein and it's like it's not giving what it was giving five years ago.
[00:53:50] Speaker A: No.
[00:53:50] Speaker B: Do you know what I mean? Like, it's like this isn't actually. Okay, the 19 year old thing.
[00:53:55] Speaker A: No, the age difference is not great at all.
No. We gotta rethink that. This is very weird.
He may look 27, but he's 500 years old.
[00:54:05] Speaker B: Yeah. Yeah. Oh my God. Yeah. And so he doesn't have a fi.
[00:54:09] Speaker A: He doesn't have a 27 year old mind. He's seen too much. Right.
[00:54:12] Speaker B: Which. He's seen way too much. Yeah. And Feyre, you've seen a lot, but not that much.
[00:54:17] Speaker A: I mean, I'm 38 years old now. If a 19 year old came in here, I'd be like, get the out of here. You're a baby. I give a birth to you.
[00:54:23] Speaker B: It just came out of the womb yesterday. Seriously?
[00:54:28] Speaker A: Perfect. Well, we don't have a game this week.
[00:54:30] Speaker B: No.
[00:54:31] Speaker A: And that's okay. You know, life's not always fun and games.
[00:54:34] Speaker B: That's not always. You know what? It's not right now.
[00:54:37] Speaker A: Oh, my God.
All right, well, thank you for tuning in. And remember, if you're feeling the vibe, rate and subscribe.
[00:54:47] Speaker B: We also want to give a shout out to Christian McCann for making us sure our song stays in check.
[00:54:52] Speaker A: That's a tongue twister.
[00:54:53] Speaker B: That was. Yeah, that was like. I can't even talk.
It was a king tonight helping us.
[00:54:59] Speaker A: He was. He came in here. He did. He did a few little, you know, tweaks and tweaks and turns, gave us
[00:55:04] Speaker B: some diner suggestions in our time of need.
[00:55:07] Speaker A: Perfect. Yeah.
[00:55:09] Speaker B: As always, thank you to the illustrious Lincoln Lodge in Chicago, Illinois, for letting us do our thing. Until next time.
[00:55:15] Speaker A: Bye.
